The launch of a leading global media company’s new streaming service involved integrating a range of existing TV services and acquired businesses, with legacy subscriptions architectures. An Equal Experts team led the successful project to create a unified subscriptions platform, using an API-led approach to ensure feature parity across different customer journeys, address legacy issues around maintenance and observability, and enable greater flexibility and cross-selling opportunities. Equal Experts was able to do this while pivoting to accommodate immediate priorities around the launch of new subscription features, as required.

Launch of high-priority, revenue-driving features such as in-app purchases and paid sharing options
Equal Experts’ client is one of the world’s leading entertainment businesses, with over 153 million worldwide subscribers to its streaming service.
The launch of the client’s new, global streaming service involved packaging together a range of different entertainment brands and businesses, each with diverse subscription architectures. The client’s developer teams struggled to deliver this while accommodating frequent requests for new, high-priority subscription features, in order to drive revenue.
Newly acquired entertainment businesses within the streaming service had followed a scale-up approach with flexible subscription features to support rapid revenue growth and easy add-on purchases. However, a lack of observability, monitoring and testing created risk around these features and challenges in replicating them. A key priority for Equal Experts was to retain these revenue-driving features within the context of a unified tech architecture that was more robust, reliable and easily maintained.
Equal Experts proposed adaptations to the client’s Agile methodology, to better fit a continually evolving project and enable the teams to iterate around new approaches and accommodate updated demands. Applying these new ways of working helped the Equal Experts team to deliver a new, unified architecture that was backwards-compatible, and design an API-led approach to moving elements from legacy subscription architectures to the new platform. In this way, new features could be developed and launched throughout the migration process, and features developed for the new API platform could be supported for customers still on old subscriptions systems. The adaptability and flexibility of Equal Experts’ approach enabled the team to continue to support the flexible subscription features that the client prioritized, while establishing a robust foundation for them.
The robust, feature-rich, unified subscriptions platform is enabling Equal Experts to launch a flow of revenue-generating subscriptions features. This is helping the media company to fully monetise its streaming properties through in-app purchases and paid sharing options, as well as a rich source of aggregated subscriptions data to inform future innovations.
In delivering a unified subscriptions platform for the streaming service, Equal Experts has not only enabled feature parity across different legacy services and unified customer experiences, but also provided a powerful platform for revenue-driving innovation. In the process, Equal Experts has helped the client to design new ways of working that fit the requirements of a fast-moving media business, and has established the Equal Experts team as a high-performing unit able to deliver on priority projects for the organisation.
