On 16 June, Equal Experts hosted its third Expert Talks event in Munich, bringing together data and technology leaders from some of Germany’s most prominent organisations to explore one of the most pressing challenges in enterprise data today: how to use GenAI to dramatically accelerate data engineering.
The evening drew practitioners and senior leaders from enterprise companies, indicating a strong signal that the topic is resonating across industries. Simon Case, Global Head of Data and AI at Equal Experts, and Thorben Louw, Lead Consultant in Data and ML Engineering, delivered practitioner-led talks centred on a clear but often underappreciated challenge: data trapped in complex legacy systems is slow and expensive to migrate, and traditional approaches — months of manual source-to-target mapping, spreadsheet-driven documentation, hand-crafted pipelines — are no longer fit for purpose.
The talks explored how GenAI changes this equation. By ingesting large volumes of legacy schema information, API documentation, and system specs, AI can do the heavy lifting of understanding data relationships, generating mapping specifications, and writing transformation code for modern platforms like Databricks and Snowflake. What once took months can now take weeks — and in some cases, days.
The conversation continued well into the networking dinner, reflecting both the quality of the content and the appetite in Munich’s data community to tackle these challenges together.
